Overview

The 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division II Group A was an international ice hockey tournament held in Madrid, Spain, from April 14-20, 2023. The tournament was part of the 2023 IIHF World Championship program and served as a qualifier for the 2024 IIHF World Championship Division I Group B.

Format

The tournament was contested by 16 teams, which were divided into two groups of eight. Each team played a single round-robin schedule within its group, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semifinals. The winners of the semifinals were promoted to the 2024 IIHF World Championship Division I Group B, while the bottom two teams in each group were relegated to the 2024 IIHF World Championship Division II Group B.

Results

In Group A, Spain and Romania finished first and second, respectively, and advanced to the semifinals. They were joined by Estonia and South Africa, who finished first and second in Group B.

In the semifinals, Spain defeated South Africa, while Romania defeated Estonia to earn promotion to the 2024 IIHF World Championship Division I Group B. The bottom two teams in each group, Serbia and Lithuania, were relegated to the 2024 IIHF World Championship Division II Group B.
